During the time of Mussolini's rule in the mid to late 1930's, it was decided to
convert these 19th century care homes into children's homes. The idea was to
provide "prevention rather than cure" to underprivileged children,
invariably from the mountain regions, who potentially had never so much as glimpsed
the sea or felt the benefit of a maritime climate.
In the mid 1970's, due to advances in medical technology, vaccinations and so on,
these buildings - found all over this area - fell deserted and gradually disintegrated in to disrepair.
Since the late 1990's and early 2000's these once magnificent edifices, have been
resurrected through re-development, and restored to their former glory, mainly into apartments.
Many now provide luxurious well-appointed holiday and permanent accommodation for Italians and
other nationalities alike.
