We tend to think of Tuscany as a region characterised by softly rolling hills,
extensive olive groves and large expanses of open arable farmland.
It is all of this of course, but parts of its coastline are relatively
undiscovered and are some of the most spectacular in all Italy.
Located just a few yards from the sea, Villa Regina Elena is situated
on the beach of Calambrone. This delightful seaside resort is about 10
miles South of Pisa and just a few miles North of Livorno on the Mediterranean coast.
This area was, due to its favourable and temperate climate, quality of air and total
absence of pollution of any sort, chosen by the Italian Government of the early 1800's
as the ideal site for residential care and recuperation homes. The public was encouraged
to utilise the then state-of-the-art, modern facilities and thereby reap the benefit of
the area's health-giving and therapeutic qualities. One could argue that the area was
one of the first "health spas" to be founded.
With approximately ten kilometres of white sandy beaches - the pine forests behind
provide the perfect shady location for two golf clubs, one with water hazards.
